Close a Tennessee Business Tax Account After a Sale

Selling a business can change which taxpayer operates it. Before closing a Tennessee business tax account, confirm whether your taxpayer is actually ending the activity tied to that account.

Confirm the account and closing date

Have your accountant identify the state business tax account and any affected locations. An ownership transaction does not always mean the entity ceases operating. See Memphis Business Brokers Team for sale guidance.

Keep the bill of sale, effective date and final operating records together. Those records help establish the period your final filing should cover.

Coordinate state and local records

The state tax account and local business license are different records. Check with the appropriate city or county office about the local license when operations end.

For an applicable final state return, follow the current Department of Revenue instructions and the TNTAP account closure process. Ask your accountant to confirm the deadline for your situation.

Retain confirmation after filing

Save the final return, payment confirmation and account closure correspondence. Resolve outstanding notices instead of assuming the sale stops future filing requests.

A business with multiple locations may need different treatment when just one location closes. Confirm the scope before requesting closure of the whole account.
